November 2006 Newsletter Chapter Matters
Distinguished Chapter Award for Liz Hale
by Tina Hoffmann
After a hard day's work at the opening day of the recent Region 2 Conference in London , a sizeable group of delegates, speakers and STC board members enjoyed a "flight" on the British Airways London Eye, followed by a 3-course meal at Chez Gerard on the South Bank. The group was relaxed and jolly, and while authoring topics did arise, we found many other things to discuss, too.

The special guest of the evening was Liz Hale, who was presented with the recently awarded Distinguished Chapter Service Award. The award acknowledges the work of chapter members who provide exemplary service to the Society through their dedication to the chapter and its activities. Liz received the award in recognition of her outstanding and sustained contribution to the success of the UK chapter in a number of leadership positions. A member of the STC for 15 years, Liz served as president, secretary, newsletter editor and competitions manager before taking a break from active chapter duties. But like so many stars before her, Liz has made a comeback and – luckily for the UK chapter – agreed to become chapter membership manager at last year's AGM.

Over the years, Liz has undertaken the most onerous tasks with confidence and good humour, setting an example for the chapter leadership team that we are all proud to follow. As a senior member, she has been a mentor to countless newcomers to the chapter and the profession. Indeed, when I first came to a chapter meeting in London , it was Liz who had told a mutual friend about this meeting and invited us to come along! On behalf of all UK chapter members, I would again like to congratulate Liz. Thank you for your inspiration, enthusiasm and dedication.
